Why Vara?
People often ask me why I chose the name Vara.
It is an old word, and the meanings that survive in it are the ones we care about. In Sanskrit it carries the sense of excellence — of something choice, and of quality that endures rather than quality that impresses once. It also carries ideas of community and togetherness.
In Swedish, vara is the verb “to be.”
Those two senses are the company. We are not concerned only with what a learner knows at the end of a course. We are concerned with who they become, and with what they are then capable of doing.
And a studio is a place where people come together to imagine something, develop it, and bring meaningful new work into being. That is the work, and that is why the name is on the door.
Our objective is not merely to help learners know more.
Our objective is to help learners become more capable.
